Eagles fall to defending national champions

CANYON, Texas – Chadron State College's softball suffered two losses in its second day of competition at the West Texas Woodward Invitational in Canyon, Texas. The Eagles play two more game Sunday against No. 11-ranked Angelo State University and Cameron University.

The Eagles (0-10, 0-0 RMAC) had a high scoring first game, falling to Texas Women's College (2-7) 22-15. CSC was led by shortstop Courtney Lecher, who had three hits in four at bats, scoring three runs as well as three RBIs.

Chadron State took an early 3-2 lead following the first inning, when Texas Woman's went off, scoring 11 runs in the second inning to take a 13-3 lead. The Eagles faced elimination by the run rule in the bottom of the fifth, down 17-6 before they made a run. CSC scored four runs to get out of elimination status, and with two outs and the bases loaded first baseman Katelyn Kruger bombed a 3-run homerun to cut the lead to three, 17-14. The Eagles would end up falling when Texas Women's College scored four in the final inning.

In a wild scoring game, there were nine batters hit by pitches, and Texas Women's would hit five homeruns including a grand slam in the second.

Chadron State faced the defending national champions and No. 1-ranked West Texas A and M. The Eagles would fall in five innings, 16-0, off of good pitching and self-inflicted wounds, allowing 11 walks throughout the game.

Lecher paved the way again, getting two hits in three at bats. Jessica Eatmon would also bat .500 on the day, having a hit in two at bats.

The Eagles allowed five quick scores in the first, and would stay within contention until late in the fourth inning when West Texas would score nine runs off of five walks and a batter hit by pitcher. Right field Renee Erwin had two hits in as many at bats, scoring three runs and six RBIs, most off of a grand slam in the fourth.

West Texas's ace pitcher Rita Hokianga had six strikeouts in four innings.
