CANYON, Texas – Chadron State College softball team closed out its non-conference tournament play with two losses in the West Texas Woodward Invitational Sunday in Canyon, Texas. The Eagles fell to Cameron University 6-3 and No. 11-ranked Angelo State University 11-0.
Chadron State (0-12) opened against Cameron with an early double by
Casey Polk, who went 3-for-3 in the game, to bring home
Taylor Bauer, who also had three base hits, in the first inning. The Eagles would hold their lead until left fielder Tara Martini scored off of a wild pitch and a sac fly to tie the game at 1-1. Cameron (6-1) would score once more in the fourth to take the lead, 2-1.
Down 2-1, CSC looked to make a move, but Cameron put the game away by scoring four runs off of three doubles. CSC would make a run in the seventh when leadoff batter
Bekka Prokaski hit a deep triple but the Eagles could only put together two runs.
Cameron pitcher Kelsey Watson earned the win, striking out nine batters in six innings.
In the second game of the day, the Eagles faced unbeaten Angelo State University (11-0). Angelo State came out swinging, scoring six runs off its first six batters, closing its scoring run with a 3-run home run by Camry Weinheimer. ASU would score two more to take an 8-0 lead in the second inning off of two solo home runs.
CSC would find a spark in the fourth following a single to right field by Rebecca Anthony. Polk would end up getting hit by a pitch, as the Eagles looked to have a chance with batters advancing to second and third off of a
Jessica Eatmon hit to the pitcher. Angelo State would ground out the inning to leave unharmed, winning the game by run rule in five innings.
Chadron State opens Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play against CSU-Pueblo and Western New Mexico in a double header action in Silver City, New Mexico, Saturday, Feb 21, and Sunday, Feb 22.
