The Chadron State College basketball teams will make their final road trip into Colorado this weekend to play Colorado-Colorado Springs on Friday night and Colorado State-Pueblo Saturday night.
Â
After that, the Eagles will wrap up their seasons on Saturday, Feb. 28 against Black Hills State in Spearfish.
Â
All four of this weekend's Chadron State opponents are headed to the RMAC playoffs and another victory or two would help them nail down home court advantages for the first round.
Â
The Colorado Springs women are 19-5 overall and 14-4 in the RMAC, good for second place behind Colorado Mesa at 16-3. The Pueblo women are 14-8 for the season and are third in the conference standings at 12-6.
Â
Things are about the same for the men's teams. Metro State is the pacesetter at 21-3 overall and 16-2 in the RMAC. Colorado Mines is second at 20-3 and 16-3 after escaping with its 73-72 win over Chadron State on a 3-pointer at the buzzer Saturday night.
Â
Then comes Colorado Springs at 20-4 for the season and 14-4 in the conference, followed by Pueblo at 17-7 and 13-5.
Â
Chadron State pulled a couple of upsets when the I-25 teams visited the Chicoine Center a month ago. The CSC men made it look rather easy by downing Pueblo 77-61 on Jan. 23, and the next night the women's team won 72-70 over Colorado Springs. The Mountain Lions were 11-1 in the conference at the time.
Â
The Pueblo men have won six straight games since the Eagles spoiled their first trip to the Chicoine Center.
Â
Both Colorado Springs teams possess some of the RMAC's most productive players.
Â
Seniors Abby Kirchoff and Brittany Hernandez are the two leading female scorers in the conference with averages of 20.6 and 18.3, respectively. Hernandez is the conference's top rebounder at 9.5 a game and Kirchoff is the busiest free throw shooter, missing just 12 of her 126 shots from the line for 90.5 percent.
Â
On the men's side, junior forward Derrick White is the RMAC's top scorer at 25.9 points a game and Alex Welsh is scoring at a 16.8 clip. Both are averaging 7.3 rebounds.
Â
White, who has tallied at least 31 points eight times this season and has a high of 44, also in the conference's busiest male free throw shooter. He's made 201 of 240 shots from the line, but his 83.8 percent success figure isn't as lofty as Kirchoff's
Â
The Pueblo ThunderWolves don't have quite the individual firepower that the Mountain Lions possess, but they're solid. The women's team is led by Ashley Piper 12.7 points and 7.4 rebounds a game. The men are getting a team-best 13.1 points a game from Tyrone Marshall. Bronson Moton is second in scoring at 12.6 points and is the top rebounder at 7.5 a game.
Â
Both Chadron State teams are 10th in the conference standings. The women are 8-11 and the men are 6-14.Â
