PUEBLO, Colo. – Three Chadron State College wrestlers are still in the hunt for a berth in the Division II National Championships after the opening two sessions of the NCAA West Super Regional Friday in Pueblo, Colorado.
Â
Sophomores
Taylor Summers (133 pounds) and
Caleb Copeland (174), along with freshman
Chance Helmick (165), all earned spots in the consolation semifinals after a successful first day at the grueling regional. Six of the 14 teams competing are ranked in the top 20 nationally and 18 wrestlers are among the top eight in each of their weight classes.
Â
The top four wrestlers in each weight class advance to the national championship, which is March 13-14 in St. Louis. Action resumes Saturday morning in Pueblo.
Â
Summers, who had a bye the first round, opened the tournament in style by claiming a 4-3 decision over fourth-ranked Dustin Reed of the University of Central Oklahoma in the second round. In the next match, Summers fell 10-4 to San Franciso State's Jordan Gurrola in the semifinals to set up a bout with Eric Hughes of Colorado State University-Pueblo for the right to wrestle for third place.
Â
At 165 pounds, Helmick dropped his first match – an 8-6 setback to Colorado School of Mines' Ethan Ruby in overtime – before winning two straight. He won 6-3 over Kregg Clarke of Fort Hays State and clung to a 7-5 decision over Juan Alvarado of New Mexico Highlands in sudden victory. Helmick will wrestle Austin Harris of Western State for third place. Helmick defeated Harris 10-9 when CSC and Western State wrestled in a dual Jan. 31.
Â
Copeland started strong at 174 pounds by pinning Newman's Juan Ortiz in the first period but fell in the next round 8-0 to Mark Mabry of Adams State. Copeland rebounded, though, and won 9-3 over Central Oklahoma's Dylan Harmon and 10-3 over Simon Fraser's Morgan Smith. Copeland will meet California Baptist's Christian Smith for third place.
Â
The other seven members of the CSC wrestling team at the regional tournament saw their seasons end Friday. However,
Robert Ozuna at 125,
Dylan Fors at 184 and
Jake Weber at 285 all won one match.
Â
The University of Nebraska-Kearney leads the team race with 113 points. Colorado Mesa is second with 92.5 and Western State is third with 90.5. Chadron State is 11
th with 21.5.
