After playing their best basketball of the season during the past two weeks at home, the Chadron State College teams will play double-headers at Western State in Gunnison and Colorado Mesa in Grand Junction this weekend.
Â
The Chadron State women have won three games in a row while the men have split their four recent home games.
Â
Both CSC teams defeated Western State when the Mountaineers were in Chadron on Dec. 6. The Eagles built a 41-28 halftime margin and won 75-66 while the CSC men broke away from a 28-28 intermission deadlock to take a 73-57 verdict.
Â
The Western women are 4-15 overall and 3-12 in the RMAC. The men are 3-16 and 2-13. Both have won just one of their last 11 games.
Â
Jade McIntosh, a 5-foot-10 senior, is the Lady Mountaineers' top scorer and rebounder at 12.4 points and 6.3 rebounds. The men's top gun is 6-1 senior Mason Biddle, who is averaging 18 points. He tallied 19 against the Eagles.
Â
Although the Mesa women defeated the Eagles 79-65 during the Mavericks' visit on Dec. 5, the CSC men rallied to surprise the Mavericks' men 64-58. A pair of 3-pointers by Chris Smith, two steals and fast break layups by
Josiah Lee and nine of 11 free throw shooting in the final five minutes spurred the victory.
Â
The Mesa women are 15-4 overall and 12-3 and in second place in the conference. The men are 14-7 and 9-6, which puts them sixth in the league.Â
Â
Both Mesa teams have an exceptional scorer. Erin Reichle, a 5-6 sophomore, poured in 31 points and Ryan Stephen, a 6-10 junior, tallied 35 against the Eagles in the December games.
Â
Reichle is averaging 17.8 points and also is the team's assist leader with 75. She's sunk 61 of 149 3-pointers for 40.9 percent and 60 of 66 free throws for 90.9 percent. Center Leanndra Gilbert is next on the scoring list at 9.9 a game and leads the rebounders with 7.9 per game.
Â
Stephen is averaging 25.6 points to rank second in the conference behind only Colorado Springs' Derrick White, who is averaging 26.3. Stephen's 59.3 field goal percentage is the fourth best in the conference and he also leads the Mavs with 8.3 rebounds per game.
Â
Mesa guards Julian Vasquez and Jerry Duckworth, who does not start, are chipping in 13.2 and 11.2 points per game, respectively. Duckworth has buried 52 of 126 shots from behind the arc for 42.1 percent.
Â
Chadron State's
Evan Brooks has the second highest 3-point shooting percentage in the RMAC. He's made 39 of 79 3-point shots for 49.4 percent. The league leader is Brian Muller of Colorado Mines. He's sunk 52 of 105.
