CLEARWATER, Fla. – Chadron State College's softball team closed out its final day in the Eckerd College Invitational with two setbacks to Palm Beach Atlantic College and Lynn University Sunday.
The Eagles came out swinging in their first game, receiving consecutive hits from
Taylor Bauer,
Rebecca Wetsch and
Jessica Eatmon. Unfortunately, Bauer was thrown out at third and Palm Beach pitched out of the inning without surrendering a run.
Chadron State would keep the game close behind strong defense, but surrendered four runs in the fourth to go down 7-0. CSC would battle in the bottom of the fourth and the fifth, but ended up losing in five, 10-0.
In its second game, Chadron State allowed Lynn University to take an early 2-0 lead after walking two and allowing a double to bounce off the fence in center field. The Eagles would bounce back though, as shortstop
Courtney Lecher reached on a single up the middle, stole second, and was brought home on a single by
Casey Polk.
Down 2-1, the Eagles surrendered five runs in the fourth off of two errors and a fielder's choice. CSC would fall down 7-1, but first basemen
Bekka Prokaski singled off of a well-placed bunt. In the following at bat,
Aspen Eubanks smashed a double down the right line, allowing Prokaski to cover all the bases on her way home. The scoring rally ended, though, and CSC allowed two more runs to lose 9-2.
Despite the score, the Eagles played well in their first tournament. The team recorded seven double plays in six games, having had 20 total in the previous season. Four Eagles,
Zoe Humphries,
Katelyn Kruger,
Cierra Cosslett and
Aspen Eubanks, leave Florida with a batting percentage higher than .250 despite having fought against a perfect game.
Chadron State College heads off to compete in the West Texas Woodward Invitational hosted by the defending national champions and the No. 1-ranked team, West Texas A&M, Friday.
