CHADRON – The Chadron State College softball team split its weekend series against Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference foe Colorado Christian University. The Eagles won game one Sunday, 5-3, but were defeated 15-1 in game two.
Â
Game one was a back and forth affair that featured three lead changes and two ties. The Cougars took an early 1-0 lead in the second inning following a run down between first and second base that allowed Gaby Vengoechea to score. In the bottom of the third, CSC's
Taylor Bauer hit a single to right center, and in the next at bat,
Courtney Lecher blasted a home run over left field for a 2-1 lead.
Â
In the top of the fourth, CCU's Letty Valenzuela would answer the call with a two-run home run of her own to regain the lead, 3-2. A single by Bauer that scored
Jessica Eatmon in the bottom of the fourth tied the game at 3-3.
Â
In the bottom of the fifth, CSC found its answer after back-to-back singles up the middle by
Amanda Einspahr and
Aspen Eubanks.
Rebekah Anthony, who was pinch hitting for CSC, advanced both runners on a sacrifice bunt.
Katelyn Kruger hit a single up the middle to score Einspahr, followed by a ground out by
Casey Polk that brought home Eubanks for the final 5-3 score.
Â
Strong defense led the way for the Eagles in game one. Pitcher
Tayler Hall picked up her sixth win of the season, striking out seven batters. Kruger had eight put outs at first, while second baseman Einspahr had a team-high four assists.
Â
In game two, CSC allowed 10 runs in the first inning off of two errors. The Eagles never recovered, falling 15-1.
