LAS VEGAS, N.M. – Chadron State College's
Casey Polk paved the way for the Eagles, racking up five hits and four RBIs en route to an 8-3 and 8-5 win over New Mexico Highlands University. Chadron State next plays at Adams State University before hosting the University of Nebraska-Kearney on Tuesday, April 21, then MSU Denver and Colorado Mesa University Saturday, April 25, and Sunday, April 26.
The Eagles (12-28, 12-16 RMAC) found the rhythm the team was missing in the first two games of the series. In the two games Saturday the team combined for five hits, while CSC exploded for 25 hits on Sunday.
In game one Polk smashed a three run home run in her clean up position to take the lead in the first inning. In the fifth the Eagles scored two more runs off of back-to-back doubles from
Zoe Humphries and
Katelyn Kruger, advancing the lead to 5-0. Highlands (16-24, 10-17 RMAC) managed three runs in the sixth, but with the lead at 5-3,
Jessica Eatmon tripled with the bases loaded to take the final lead, 8-3.
The Eagles did their damage in game two in the third inning, scoring six runs, including a three run home run by
Shea Graham. Down 8-1, Highlands made a run in the bottom of the seventh, but came up short losing 8-5.
Eight Eagles made contact on day two, led by Polk and
Courtney Lecher with five hits. Polk led the team in the series, batting .500.
With the wins the Eagles move into playoff contention. Chadron State owns the eighth best conference record, with the top eight making it to the conference tournament.
