CSC volleyball team wins first match vs. Westminster

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah—The Chadron State College volleyball team was successful during its first competition against one of the two newest members of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference on Saturday night.

The Eagles swept past Westminster College 26-24, 25-17, 25-21 for their third win of the season.

After losing 10 sets by two or fewer points this season, the Eagles used their two-point triumph in the first set as the springboard to the win.

The score was knotted 10 times in the opening set, including 24-24, before Chadron State notched the victory. A kill by Alexis Ferris, who had just entered the set, provided the 26th point and the win.

CSC had smoother sailing in the second set, building leads of 10-3 and 20-9 before closing it out.

Things were tight again much of the third set, but the Eagles never trailed after breaking a 7-7 tie.  Their largest lead was at 17-10.

Freshmen were among Chadron State's leaders.  Madison Webb handed out 37 set assists and Kenzie Chrisman had a match-high .381 hitting percentage with 10 kills and only two hitting errors in 21 attacks.  Chrisman also had a match-best six assisted blocks.

Junior Gabby Varela also had 10 kills and a match-high 16 assists for the Eagles.

Senior Alyse Horton paced the Griffins, now 4-9 for the season and 1-4 in the RMAC, with 11 kills and had 12 digs to share team honors.

The Eagles will be home this weekend to play Colorado State-Pueblo on Friday night and Western State on Saturday night.
