KEARNEY, Neb. – January 16, 2016 -- The Chadron State College wrestling team swept all four of its non-conference duals Saturday afternoon, at the Midwest Duals hosted by the University of Nebraska-Kearney.
The Eagles advanced their dual record to 9-1 on the season as they defeated four NCAA Division II opponents. In the other matches, Augustana also swept the same opponents, and the two NAIA schools both defeated Truman without facing each other, to finish equally at 1-2.
Chadron State won eight of 10 matches over Minot State in their first dual of the day. Redshirt freshman
Brock Thumm, at 141 pounds, notched an overtime pin against Tanner Crissler, who is ranked sixth in Super Region III.
Terrance McKinney (149), and
Caleb Copeland (174) also registered victories by fall.
Taylor Summers (133) picked up a tech fall, 16-1. For the Beavers, Marcus Polak (157) and Mitchell Eull (285) each recorded wins.
Against Newman, CSC won six bouts but also picked up a forfeit at 285.
Brandon Kile (125) squared off against NWCA No. 2 Dustin Reed in the opening faceoff, holding his nationally-ranked opponent to a five-point decision, his closest win of the day. The Eagles then rattled off three straight wins in dominating fashion, providing all the points they would need for victory. Summers completed another technical fall, 15-0, then
Joshua Miller (141) and McKinney each got first-period pins. At 174, Copeland's 7-4 decision over Heath Gray was important for regional seeding, as Gray is currently slotted fifth in Super Region 4 while Copeland is third.
Mary proved a tougher challenge on the scoreboard, yielding no pins or tech falls, but Chadron State prevailed in six matches out of 10. The Marauders got only one bonus point in the dual, with Travis Smith earning a major decision at 285. Eagle wrestlers McKinney, Copeland, and
Chance Helmick (165) picked up a bonus point apiece, majoring their opponents.
Stuart Hircock received a forfeit at 197. At 141 pounds, Rudy Guillen, ranked fourth in Super Region III, escaped Thumm with a 6-5 decision. In the dual just prior, Guillen was a 15-4 winner over the sixth-ranked wrestler in Super Region IV, Dan Gaylor of New Mexico Highlands.
Finally, the Eagles faced Southwest Minnesota State, escaping with a 24-16 win. Sophomore
Joshua Miller picked up his second pin of the day at 141, and Summers took home his third tech fall of the duals.
McKinney and Helmick each finished the day's wrestling a perfect 4-0 in Kearney.
The 9-1 dual record is the best start for an Eagle wrestling team since at least 2000-01.
Chadron State will only have a couple days back on campus before they head out to a dual with Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference opponent and NWCA No. 20 CSU-Pueblo on Wednesday, January 20, at 7 p.m.
