SILVER CITY, N.M. -- January 16, 2016 -- For the first time since schedules have allowed, the Chadron State College women's basketball team swept both New Mexico Highlands University and Western New Mexico University on the road on consecutive nights. They completed the feat tonight, leading for 33:22 including every second of the third and fourth quarters. The Eagles return home with a 61-53 win.
The two-game swing is notoriously difficult, with the travel involved leading up to, and between games. In addition, WNMU returns this season from their first-ever RMAC Tournament berth.
It was also a historical moment for sophomore
Maka Daysh, who visited rareified air with some of her individual statistics. With 22 points and 20 rebounds in the game, she became only the second player in CSC history with a 20-point, 20-rebound game. Laurie Tucker scored 21 points and grabbed 20 rebounds against Dana College in 1981-82.Â
No other player since Cyndee Wooden in 1982-83 had grabbed 20 boards in a single game. The school's single game rebound record of 21 was set by Kim Lytle in 1979-80.Daysh picked up 14 of her 22 points from the free-throw line, where she was 14-of-18.
Junior guard
Erin Graham added 16 points in the winning effort, grabbing four rebounds and adding three steals. Senior guard
Emma Block also finished in double figures with 10 points. Senior forward
Stephanie Knowles, a consistent force on defense had six points and three assists to go with nine rebounds, three steals, and a blocked shot.
CSC opened up an early 8-5 lead, but three unanswered buckets by the Mustangs' Jade Botelho gave the home team their first lead of the game.
After trading points for several minutes,
Emma Block opened up a five-point lead for the Eagles, which sparked some momentum for her team going into the half. CSC went into the break up 38-25.
WNMU's Desiree Smith gave her team a lift near the middle of the third, hitting back to back jumpers and starting a 15-3 run. During that span of just over four minutes, Smith got nine points, cutting it to 44-43.
From there, the Eagle defense clamped down, outrebounding their opponents 14 to 6 in the fourth quarter. CSC grabbed six offensive boards to WNMU's three in the final period.
Over the course of 40 minutes, the CSC women won on the glass to the tune of 52 to 31. The 21-board advantage made up for losing 23 turnovers to the Mustangs' 13.
