CHADRON, Neb. -- January 2, 2016 -- Junior guard
Warren Gordon tied a season-high 21 points, and senior post
Jay Feltson matched a career-best 11 rebounds, as the Chadron State College men's basketball team (5-5, 3-3 RMAC) overcame a 15-point Western State lead just seconds before the half, winning 83-78 tonight in Chicoine Center. The Mountaineers go to 2-10 (1-5 RMAC) while the Eagles, after six conference games, fit into a seven-way tie for seventh place in the league standings.
The Mountaineers were nearly unstoppable from long range in the first half, sinking nine of 13 tries from beyond the three-point arc. They finished with 51.7% three-point shooting after cooling off considerably in the second half. Sophomore guard Ben Beauchamp, a transfer from Black Hills State, was the biggest contributor on the night, hitting six of his 16 treys for a 26-point total.
Chadron State's Gordon led a trio of Eagles in double figures, and he along with backcourt compadres
Billy Johnson (14 points) and
Andre Miller (12 points) each dished out three assists. Gordon's 13 second-half points
helped the home team to a 60.0% field goal percentage in the second half. Miller and Davante McCallum each shot 4-of-5 from the field in the game.
Sophomore point guard
Sharif Black, despite getting only a pair of free throws, led the team with six assists.
Feltson carried the Eagles to a 41-32 advantage on the boards, their third-highest rebound margin of the season. He tallied a whopping seven caroms on the offensive glass, with Johnson grabbing six total boards and Black and junior forward
Jordan Green each nabbing five.
It was Gordon who sparked the Eagles to a 17-5 run to open the second half, hitting on three of four three-point attempts after the break. Feltson's four points in the game included two free throws at the close of the first half, plus a putback in the opening seconds of the second, which cut the Mountaineer lead to four. After a close back-and-forth in the second half,
Justyn Anderson's driving layup at 6:29 put the Eagles ahead for good at 68-66, and an emphatic dunk by Green provided the winning points at 2:49, making the score 79-74.
CSC hosts CSU-Pueblo tomorrow afternoon at approximately 3 p.m. The ThunderWolves own road wins over two nationally-ranked opponents accounting for No. 9 Midwestern State's only loss and one of No. 12 Tarleton State's two defeats on the season. They dropped a 93-85 decision tonight to Regis University, who the Eagles defeated 70-67 in Chadron on December 5.
