CHADRON, Neb. -- January 22, 2016 -- The Chadron State College men snapped a skid of five games tonight at Chicoine Center, winning 69-62 in a second-half comeback over Westminster College.
Davante McCallum double-doubled with 17 points, 11 rebounds, and added a pair of assists and a pair of steals.
Sharif Black had his third 20-point game in a row, playing the lion's share of minutes, shooting 6 of 11 from the field and 8 of 10 from the foul line.
Three Westminster players - Zerrion Payton, Quincy Bair, and Brandon Warr, reached double digit scoring. Their leading scorer Casey Evans finished with only seven.
CSC avenges its 2012 loss to the Griffins, in the two teams' only previous meeting. That was won by the Westminster men by a 25-point margin.
The Eagles shot a mere 23.5% in the first half, yet managed to keep pace with the Griffins through aggressive rebounding and consistent free throw shooting. They trailed 25-23 at the half.
In the second half. the shots started falling and they managed a respectable 46.2% from the field. They grabbed a lead for the first time at 15:03 in the latter period, on a three-point missile by
Jordan Green, and regained it for good at 5:53 on Green's layup.
A big key for the Eagles early on was ball control. The CSC men won on the offensive glass 13-4 Â in the first half, which prevented the game from slipping away early. They finished with a 45-40 advantage in rebounding.
"I'm happy the kids kept fighting," said head coach
Brent Bargen. "They did a great job on finishing. We stayed aggressive and got all the big rebounds, for the most part. It was just good, gutsy playing."
Chadron State  will host Colorado Mesa Saturday. The Mavericks won Friday night against Regis in Denver by a 105-80 margin.
