CHADRON, Neb. -- January 22, 2016 -- The Chadron State College wrestling team hiked its dual record to 11-1 Friday night by topping Adams State 25-19 on its home mat in the Nelson Physical Activity Center.
Each team won five weight classes, but the Eagles picked up bonus points four of them—one on a pin, another on a technical fall and two forfeits because Adams State was open at those slots.
The pin was posted by No. 2 ranked
Terrance McKinney, who ended the 149-pound match in just a minute and 19 seconds.
In the previous match, CSC's Josh Miller needed less than two periods to take a 16-0 technical fall at 141 pounds. The score was 16-0 that included two takedowns, a pair of two-point nearfalls and two four-point nearfalls by Miller, who won for the ninth straight time after opening the season with a 2-5 record.
Another highlight for the Eagles saw
Chance Helmick manage a takedown in the closing seconds to edge Koery Windham 4-2 at 165 pounds. The victory was the 13th in a row for Helmick, who is now 23-4 for the season.
McKinney, Miller and Helmick are sophomores.
Picking up the forfeits for the Eagles were
Johnny Porter at 157 pounds and
Caleb Copeland at 174.
Adams State's wins were in the first two and last three matches.
Ian Wingstrom opened the dual with a 3-0 decision over
Brandon Kile at 125 pounds. Next, the Grizzlies' No. 3 ranked Martin Ramirez pinned CSC's
Taylor Summers.
At the other end of the scale, brothers Joe and Richard Bencomo won 7-2 and 5-2 decisions at 184 and 197 pounds, respectively, and Adams State's Tui Laulu used a large size advantage to post a 10-1 major decision at heavyweight.
Chadron State's 11-1 record nearly matches the 11-0-1 mark that the 1971-72 team compiled to set the all-time standard through the Eagles' first dozen duals.
After wrestling (and winning) six duals in the past week, the Eagles' will have more than a week off before competing in the first Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Tournament on Sunday, Jan. 31 in Pueblo, Colo.
