Six Eagles place at RMAC tourney

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- January 31, 2016 -- Six Chadron State College wrestlers finished in the top six of the brackets today at the RMAC Championships, held at the U.S. Olympic Complex in Colorado Springs. The team was sixth in total tournament points, falling just two points shy of fourth. California Baptist University won the tournament and were declared the 2015-16 RMAC Champions.

Taylor Summers was the first of three CSC finalists, reaching the championship bout at 133 pounds. Summers got a rematch in the finals against NWCA No. 3 Martin Ramirez, faring much better against the former NCAA qualifier this time, but falling 10-4 to finish in second place.

Terrance McKinney took on sixth-ranked Drew Schumann in the 149-pound finals. It was the pair's first meeting, as CSC has yet to face Colorado Mesa in duals so far. Schumann came away with a 5-0 decision and the tournament title in this meetup, placing McKinney in second.

Chance Helmick was the third Eagle finalist of the day at 165 pounds. His opponent, Nolan Kistler of Cal Baptist, was a relative unknown with only two NCAA Division II matches on his record this season. Again, a CSC wrestler competed three full periods, but Kistler was victorious in a 10-3 decision.

At 174 pounds, Caleb Copeland place fourth, losing a heartbreaker in the second round of the tournament to the Co-Wrestler of the Meet, Austin Harris of Western State. He was able to advance to the consolation finals, where he fell 8-0 to Christian Smith of Cal Baptist.

Placing fifth at heavyweight, Cooper Cogdill got a pin over Colter Bentley of Colorado Mesa, and defeated Western State's Lewis Arendall in the placement match. His only losses were to the third and fourth-place finishers.

Shane Rodenburg was sixth at 184, after advancing to the semifinal round and dropping a major decision to the eventual champion. He was able to advance to the placement rounds in consolation, but was defeated there in the fifth place match by San Francisco State's Jonathan Costa.
