CHADRON, Neb. -- January 7, 2016 -- The Chadron State College basketball teams will be playing their South Dakota neighbors this weekend Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action.
The Eagles will take on South Dakota Mines in Rapid City on Friday at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center starting at 5:30 and play Black Hills State in Spearfish on Saturday, beginning at 4 o'clock.
Those teams won three of the four games when they visited Chadron in December. The Black Hills women's team topped the Eagles 63-46 and the Lady Hardrockers prevailed 71-64. In the men's action, Chadron State built a 38-18 halftime lead and won 74-59 over Black Hills, but Mines was victorious the next night 66-60.
The CSC men are 5-6 overall and 3-4 in the RMAC. The Lady Eagles are 3-8 for the season and, like the men, are 3-4 in the conference.
The Black Hills men's record is identical to the Eagles. The Mines men are 6-5 overall and 4-3 in league play.
On the women's side, the Lady Jackets are 9-2 for the season and 6-1 in the RMAC. The Mines women are 5-6 overall and 2-5 in the conference.
Last weekend, when both CSC teams defeated Western State, but lost to Colorado State-Pueblo at home, the South Dakota teams were on the road at Colorado Mesa in Grand Junction and Westminster College in Salt Lake City.
Both Black Hills teams and the Mines men won at Westminster, but lost at Mesa, while the Lady Hardrockers dropped both of their games during the trip.
The Mines women are generally led in scoring by Megan Rohrer and Kaylie Peterson, who are averaging 14 and 11 points, respectively. Peterson, a 5-10 sophomore, scored 16 points and grabbed 10 rebounds against the Eagles. Another of the Hardrockers, 6-0 senior Devyn Asche, scored 11 points and pulled down 17 rebounds.
The Hardrockers' men made last weekend's trip without their two top scorers, Konor Kulas, who is averaging 18.5 points, and Jamall Taylor, who is averaging nearly 11, because they have leg injuries. Brian Orr, a 6-6 sophomore, stepped up and scored 24 points during the 68-63 overtime win at Westminster.
The Black Hills State women have been getting balanced scoring. No one has tallied 20 points in their first 11 games. But the Lady Jackets lead the RMAC in field goal shooting at 41.8 percent and are second in 3-point shooting at 33.6 percent.
The CSC women are fourth among the 14 RMAC teams on the field goal accuracy list at 40.4 percent.
The Jackets' Nick Ongarato is averaging 21.7 points, second highest among men in the RMAC. The 6-foot-3 senior has been the team's top scorer in each of the last eight games, topped by 31 in a double overtime 98-95 loss to New Mexico Highlands.
Riley Ryan, a 6-5 senior, is averaging 15 points for Black Hills and also has had a 31-point game this season. Â
