RAPID CITY, S.D.— January 8, 2016 — South Dakota Mines built a 24-11 lead early in the second period and never trailed while holding on for a 58-56 win over Chadron State in a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference women's basketball game played in the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center.
Chadron State cut the deficit to 29-26 at halftime and was behind 45-38 heading into the fourth period.
The Eagles finally tied the score at 54-54 with 2:27 to play on an old fashioned 3-point play by
Erin Graham. The Lady Hardrockers regained the lead at 57-54 by making one of two free throws, followed by Devyn Asche's layup with just under a minute to play.
Chadron State's
Maka Daysh answered with a basket with 40 seconds remaining, but that was the end of the Eagles' scoring as they missed a pair of free throws and two field goal attempts in the final 15 seconds.
Neither team shot well from the field. Mines was 22 of 72 (30.6 percent), while Chadron State was 17 of 57 (29.8). The Eagles made up some of the scoring difference at the free throw line, where they were 17 of 26, compared to the Hardrockers' eight of 10.
Mines' Kahlie Peterson, a 5-foot-10 sophomore, led all scorers with 14 points. Taylor Molstad contributed nine and Asche eight.
Graham, Daysh and
Stephanie Knowles all scored 10 points for CSC.
Allegria Chisom,
Emma Block and
Maddie Metzger added eight apiece.
Each team collected 40 rebounds with Graham and Asche tying for game-high honors with eight apiece.
Mines also defeated the Eagles 71-64 in Chadron on Dec. 12. The Hardrockers are now 6-6 overall while CSC is 3-9. Both are 3-5 in the conference. The Eagles will play at Black Hills State in Spearfish at 4 p.m. Saturday.
