Eagles upend Highlands on the road

LAS VEGAS, N.M. -- October 21, 2016 -- No set was easily won, but the Chadron State College volleyball team left Las Vegas, New Mexico, Friday night with a 3-1 (25-22, 26-28, 25-22, 25-23) win. Each of the four sessions was taken by three or less points.

"The fight they showed throughout the night," said head volleyball coach Riann Mullis, "that was fun to watch. I really enjoyed coaching a team that was able to fight back and come from behind. I really feel like that shows growth."

The Eagles battled from an eight-point deficit in set two, but after tying the set at 26-26, they committed two straight attack errors to give the Cowboys the set and even he match at 1-1.

Statistically, several Eagles had solid nights, despite missing sophomore middle blocker Kenzie Chrisman, who suffered a knee injury in practice late in the week.

Rudy Leasau collected 18 kills to lead the Eagles. She also led the team with four service aces to finish with a season-high 22.0 points. Alia Brennan's 15 kills followed, and were a career-high for the senior Chadron native in a four-set match. Brennan's .433 hitting percentage led all hitters.

Madison Webb's season-high 50 assists propelled the Eagles to a .205 hitting percentage. The sophomore setter matched a career high with four kills, and added 13 digs and three service aces.

Emily Bruce's 30 digs were also a season-high and her best in a CSC uniform.

In Chrisman's absence, redshirt freshman middle hitter Timmi Keisel came in and led the team with three total blocks.

"Ashton Burditt went in as a defensive specialist when we were struggling on defense," added Mullis, "and she was phenomenal. She went in and did her job, and I couldn't ask for more."

Burditt, a true freshman, had seven timely digs in her most extensive action so far as an Eagle.

The team goes to Pueblo, Colorado on Saturday, where they will meet with CSU-Pueblo at 7 p.m.
