Team effort propels Eagles over Hardrockers, 3-1

RAPID CITY, S.D. -- October 7, 2016 -- Friday evening was redemption of sorts for the Eagle volleyball team, as Chadron State College (4-12, 3-4 RMAC) took a 3-1 match from a South Dakota Mines team (1-17, 0-7 RMAC) that denied them a tournament spot a year ago on the Hardrockers' home court.

The Eagles were hitting on all cylinders, getting great performances from libero, setter, and several positions on offense.

"It was good for us," said CSC head volleyball coach Riann Mullis. "We lost one set because of inconsistencies, but we fixed it. We've been put in those situations before and weren't able to finish, but handling those pressure situations, and coming out on top - that is a big sign of progress."

All the usual suspects for the Eagles did their parts in the victory, but according to Mullis, it was defense - in particular the backcourt - that put the team ahead in the match.

Emily Bruce had her best match since the Sioux Falls trip, posting 23 digs to finish with an average of 5.75 per set. She put up two assists and struck twice in service for a pair of aces.

Katie Thoeny, whom Mullis commended after the match, had nine digs to finish third on the team.

"She came in and started the match for us tonight at defensive specialist," said Mullis. "At that position, you get put on the backburner sometimes without getting as many touches, but she made great plays for us. She really stepped up and I was really happy with the role she played."

Rudy Leasau led both sides with 18 kills and added 11 digs to finish second on the team. Gaby Varela concluded the match with 13 kills.

Alia Brennan once again had an efficient match with nine kills, an ace, three digs and three total blocks, while committing only two errors on offense. She hit for a team-high .386.

Kenzie Chrisman and Varela each accounted for three total blocks.

The Eagles continue their South Dakota trip at Black Hills State tomorrow. First serve is at 5:30 p.m.
