CHADRON, Neb. -- November 16, 2016 -- The Chadron State College men's basketball team will open its home schedule Friday evening by entertaining the Northern State Wolves from Aberdeen, S.D. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m.
Both teams suffered one-point losses Tuesday night. The homestanding Bellevue Bruins edged Chadron State 78-77 in the Eagles' season-opener and Southwest Minnesota nipped Northern 83-82 during the Wolves' first home game of the season.
Prior to that, Northern State opened its schedule by playing in a classic at Southern Nazarene in Bethany, Oklahoma. The Wolves defeated the hosts 91-88 in the first game, but lost to Harding University of Arkansas 93-69 in the second game.
The Wolves are scoring at a pace of 80.7 points per game, but allowing 88.0. They have turned the ball over more than 18 times per game, while their opponents are averaging six fewer errors.
Following the three games, Northern has three players who have tallied between 43 and 48 points.
Mack Arvidson, a 6-foot-2 senior leads with 48 points, 6-4 junior D.J. Pollard had 44 points and Ian Smith, a 5-10 sophomore has 43.
Carter Evans, the Wolves' 6-10 starting post player, is shooting 82.4 percent (14-of-17) through the first three games.
Both the Wolves and Southwest Minnesota were hot from the field Tuesday night. The Wolves hit 62.2 percent from the field and the Mustangs sank 59 percent.
Chadron State shot just 41.3 percent from the field at Bellevue, but buried eight of 19 three-pointers. Senior guard
Warren Gordon set the pace by going 7-of-10 from behind the arc and finished with 30 points, pending a statistical correction. Forward
Austin Hall came off the bench and scored 15 points, all of them in the second half for the Eagles.
Northern State is the alma mater of Chadron State coach
Houston Reed. During his first season there in 2000-01, he scored 13 points in 16 minutes during the Wolves' 101-73 victory over the Eagles. The box score from the game shows he was five of six on shots from the field, including three-for-three from 3-point range, not bad for a 6-7 post player.
The Wolves have won all four games with the Eagles. Last year was the first time the teams had met since 1997, and Northern was victorious 83-63 in Aberdeen.
The Eagles also will be at home on Tuesday, Nov. 22 at 6 p.m. to play Montana State-Billings. The Yellowjackets were in a classic at Riverside, California, last weekend and lost to Cal Baptist 101-86, but beat Holy Names University 88-80.
Marc Mathews scored 30 points and Preston Beverly 20 for Billings in the victory, but the pair combined for just 16 points in the opener.
