CHADRON, Neb. -- The Chadron State College basketball teams will conclude their seasons Friday night by playing the Regis Rangers in Denver. The double-header will start at 5 p.m.
The teams opened their Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference schedules on Dec. 5 in Chadron. The Eagles won both games by narrow margins.
The women put together a 9-0 run late in the game to win 66-64 and men prevailed 70-67.
Three months later, the Regis women are the only one of the four teams advancing to the RMAC's postseason Tournament next week.
Buoyed by a nine-game winning streak mostly in January, the Lady Rangers are 17-10 overall and 15-6 in conference games. Senior guard Bay'lee Purdy leads the team with a 15-point average, has made 66 3-pointers and is 50 of 54 from the free throw line. Both senior point guard Caresse Williams and Kaylie Rader, a 6-foot-4 junior, are averaging 11.1 points. Rader is one of the conference's top rebounders at 8.4 a game.
The CSC women enter their final game with an 8-13 conference record. Despite being forced to play without seniors
Stephanie Knowles and
Emma Block because of injuries several games this month, the Eagles remained in the playoff picture until last weekend.
Sophomore center
Maka Daysh ranks third in the RMAC in scoring at 15.7 points a game and is the rebounding leader with a 9.7 average. She has had 12 double-doubles this season, including five this month.
The Regis men are 9-18 overall and 7-14 in the RMAC. A pair of young Rangers are leading the team in scoring. Freshman Jarrett Broadbeck has sunk 91 3-pointers, the most in the RMAC, and is averaging 16.6 points, while sophomore Dexter Sienko is averaging 16.3 points along with seven rebounds.
After getting off to a promising start by winning four of their first six games, it's been a long season for the Chadron State men, winning only twice since then. They have shot just 39.3 percent from the field for the season, while the opponents have shot 50 percent.
Juniors
Warren Gordon and
Billy Johnson are leading the Eagles in scoring at 12.3 and 11.4 points a game. Sophomore
Sharif Black is averaging 11.2 points.
