Even keel for CSC softball during weekend in Grand Junction

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. -- After sweeping Colorado Christian University (4-13, 3-4 RMAC) and going 0-2 against Colorado Mesa University (7-7, 6-1 RMAC), the Chadron State College softball team (10-8-1, 5-3 RMAC) finished a weekend in Colorado at an even 2-2.

Tayler Hall struck out 17 batters over the weekend, getting the win on Sunday. Cierra Cosslet went 1-1 in two starts. Courtney Lecher hit .467 with a team-high four RBI and three runs scored. Lindsey Karlin was .455 in the batters' box, driving in three RBI and crossing the plate a team-best four times. Zoe Humphries hit for the cycle in four games combined and scored the winning run against CCU on Sunday, driven in by Katelyn Kruger on a double.

On Friday, CSC won the first game 8-3 over CCU in their first neutral-site conference matchup of the season. Karlin and Bekka Prokaski each scored unearned runs in the second on two CCU errors, to pick up the go-ahead and the eventual game-winner. Cosslett picked up her RMAC-leading fifth win of the season, throwing her sixth complete game and scattering seven hits while allowing three runs. She also struck out two.

In the late game on Friday, CSC was held to four hits through the first six innings. The Eagles left seven runners on base as the Mavericks got enough offense in the first inning to outlast Chadron State 5-2. Prokaski went 3-of-3 in the loss.

Saturday morning, Colorado Mesa racked up nine runs in the first four innings versus Chadron State's two. The Eagles came up with three runs in the sixth, on three walks, an error, and a Shea Graham triple, however the Mavs prevailed 9-5. Lecher went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.

Chadron State's afternoon game against CCU went 10 innings. Hall started out pitching three no-hit innings, carrying a shutout through five. Humphries solo homered in the first inning to go into the sixth, Eagles up 1-0. In the top of the sixth, Kruger reached on a single, bringing in Carolyn Johnson to pinch run. Aspen Eubanks also singled, and both runners advanced on a sac bunt by Graham. With one out, Johnson scored on a Karlin sac fly to go up 2-0.

CCU got a run on three hits in the bottom of the inning, and plated another following a wild pitch in the seventh.

The Eagles came up big in the top of the 10th, with a Humphries triple followed by a Kruger RBI double to spark a four-run attack. Kruger's hit brought in Breeze Phillips, pinch-running for Humphries, for the winning score. Eubanks knocked home Kruger on the following play. Graham singled to right field, and two outs later, both Eubanks and Graham came home on a single by Taylor Bauer.

Hall went to 4-1 on the season after pitching all 10 frames, fanning 12 batters in the process.

Chadron State hosts its first games of the year next weekend, drawing Western New Mexico University for the final time as a league member. The Mustangs are currently 9-13 overall, 5-2 in conference, pending the outcome of one game in progress. The doubleheaders begin at noon on Saturday, and 11 a.m. on Sunday.
