ALAMOSA, Colorado -- March 19, 2016 -- Surpassing last season's total of 15 wins, Chadron State College softball (17-13-1, 11-7 RMAC) won its first two games of the weekend at RMAC contender Adams State (11-19, 9-9 RMAC), moving past the Grizzlies into sole possession of fourth place in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference standings.
The Eagles exploded for 19 runs in the two games, winning 8-4 and 11-4.
Tayler Hall (8-2) and
Cierra Cosslett (7-6) each picked up a complete game win as Hall fanned 12 batters in seven innings, and Cosslett scattered just five hits to allow only three earned runs.
After falling behind 3-0 in the second inning of the opener,
Katelyn Kruger homered for three runs to tie.
Zoe Humphries tacked on a solo homer to lead off the fifth, for the go-ahead.
Lindsey Karlin had an RBI triple for the fifth run, then scored on the ensuing play at first making it 6-3.
Kruger doubled home two more runs in the sixth, to put the Eagles up 8-3. The Grizzlies only managed a single additional score, in the bottom of the same inning.
In the afternoon start time,
Aspen Eubanks homered to lead off the sixth inning, and hit a three-run shot over center field in the seventh, as CSC scored multiple runs in four separate innings to win 11-4 without ever trailing in the game.
The Eagles bolted out of the gate, getting four runs in their first turn batting. Humphries, batting third hit an RBI single which brought home
Courtney Lecher.
Kayla Michel also singled home a run before
Lindsey Karlin hit her second triple of the day to get the third and fourth runners home.
In the third inning, Michel and
Kendyl Moody both scored on a throwing error. Eubanks' sixth-inning solo shot made it 7-3, and
Taylor Bauer's RBI single put the Eagles up 8-3. Eubanks' three-run homer in the seventh gave the Eagles their final points, before ASU added a single run in their final at-bat.
In the two contests combined, Karlin batted 5-for-7 (.714) for team-highs of nine total bases and 1.286 slugging percentage. Eubanks was credited with seven RBI and the two homers. Kruger's five RBI came on 3-of-7 hitting including one round-tripper and a double. Humphries was 3-for-8 and responsible for five runs, scoring three and plating two on a single and a solo homer.
The Eagles and Grizzlies are back at it tomorrow at 11 a.m. for another twinbill.
