KEARNEY, Neb. -- March 8, 2016 -- Five different Chadron State College softball players batted .500, and 12 players contributed to runs scored, as the Eagles went 1-1 against midstate rival the University of Nebraska at Kearney in a doubleheader on Tuesday at Dryden Park on the UNK campus.
Kearney's number one pitcher, Meg Householder, struggled early, and was pulled in the second inning of the first game. By that time, the Eagles were up 5-1 with doubles by
Morgan Wilhelm and
Courtney Lecher.
The Lopers evened things up in the third, however. CSC's
Zoe Humphries was able to plate a run in the top of the inning, but the UNK hitters managed half of their game's total base hits in the bottom of the third, putting three of those up for extra bases.
Things looked promising for the Eagles in the seventh, as CSC entered up 7-6 and got another RBI single from Humphries. However, the Lopers were able to put across three in the bottom of the inning to end the game up 9-8.
Freshman pitcher
Dallas Magnusson allowed only two hits through the first four innings in game two, but both were home runs. Meanwhile the Eagles led for four and a half innings on a two-run home run by
Kayla Michel, a
Shea Graham RBI single, and a solo homer by
Taylor Bauer.
The Lopers tied things up in the bottom of the fifth, at five runs apiece.
In the top of the seventh, Michel again homered, giving the Eagles the winning run.
Cierra Cosslett came in for the final three outs, and the save.
Lecher's four RBI led the team for the afternoon, as she also crossed the plate three times. Michel had a slugging percentage of 2.000 after two round-trippers in four at-bats. Humphries also batted .500 at 3-for-6 at the plate, as did
Caroline Johnson and
Shea Graham, each with a 2-for-4 effort.
Kinsley Mason, pitching a complete game in the loss, had five strikeouts.
The Eagles are back in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action facing CSU-Pueblo, and MSU Denver this weekend, in Pueblo, Colorado.
