CHADRON, Neb. -- April 3, 2016 -- The Chadron State College softball team (21-15-1, 15-9 RMAC) kept the beat going this season with a 3-1 series win over Fort Lewis College (11-26, 8-16 RMAC), splitting their Sunday doubleheader at home.
"I was pleased to win another conference series," said CSC head coach Rob Stack. "Any time you can do that, you're helping your spot in the standings. We outscored our opponent 28-9, and that's the kind of success we expect to have."
The Eagles took just a little over an hour to claim the morning game 11-0 in five innings.
Tayler Hall twirled a brilliant one-hit shutout, pitching the complete game.
"Tayler pitched her best weekend of the season so far for us," said Stack. "She was dominant in the circle."
Aspen Eubanks went 2-for-3 with three RBI and three runs scored to account for 6 of the Eagles' 11 runs. She hit a leadoff homer in the third inning and singled in the fourth to drive home the critical two runs to put the score at 9-0.
Taylor Bauer also went 2-for-3, slapping a two-run home run in the fourth inning and a single in the second.
Kayla Michel started the scoring off in the first inning with a three-run shot to right field.
Game two on Sunday was the only black mark on the Eagles' weekend, as they fell behind 4-0 in the first inning and couldn't find the same spark off the bats that they enjoyed in the previous three games.
"We would have liked to hit the ball better in game four," said Stack. "We may have pressed a little too hard, because there were a lot of balls hit at the ground. On the opponents' side, there were several balls blooped just out of the infield and got behind us."
The Skyhawks put across four runs in the fourth inning, getting three hits but also benefitting from two unearned runs on two CSC errors.
The Eagles' scoreless first inning in the game broke a ten-inning scoring streak of at least one run, going back to Saturday's game two.
Rebekah Anthony and
Katelyn Kruger each managed an RBI in the third inning, and
Zoe Humphries hit a leadoff homer in the sixth. With a chance to win the game in the seventh, however, a Humphries pop-up left the infield but was recovered by the shortstop for FLC's game-winning out.
Pending the outcome of MSU Denver's Monday doubleheader, Chadron State will finish the weekend between two and four games out of second place. The Eagles have a short road trip to Black Hills State next weekend, where they would have a chance at clinching an RMAC Tournament berth hinging on Fort Lewis's success next weekend against Western New Mexico.
