SPEARFISH, S.D. -- April 9, 2016 -- For the first time in program history, the Chadron State College softball team swept a team on their home field in a four-game weekend series. The Eagles won games three and four of the series against Black Hills State University, 6-1 and 2-1, to accomplish the feat after winning two on Friday afternoon.
The series with BHSU was moved up due to an unfavorable weather forecast for Sunday.
"I didn't realize until someone on the team said it," said coach Rob Stack of the historic weekend. "We're happy and excited about some of the things we were able to do this weekend. Pitching was phenomenal, only giving up four runs. We gave up six hits all day Saturday. We just wanted to make sure we'd finish things off today, after giving up a couple of games recently at the end of the weekend."
The two Eagle pitchers,
Tayler Hall and
Cierra Cosslett, each pitched two complete games. They allowed only two runs, neither earned, on Friday to combine for an ERA of 0.00. The pair each allowed only one run on Saturday. Both CSC hurlers finished with a combined weekend ERA of under 1.00, with Hall recording an average of 0.50 in 14 innings, and Cosslett right there with 0.58 in 12 innings. Both also held their Yellow Jacket opponents to under .200 batting, with Hall registering a .180 and Cosslett's .190 almost equal.
Only one other RMAC team has held another team to as few runs and earned runs in a four-game series all season.
Offensively, senior
Katelyn Kruger led the team batting with a 7-for-14 effort at the plate. She was second on the team accounting for six runs, with three RBI and three runs scored.
Junior
Zoe Humphries was the top power hitter for the Eagles, getting a double and a pair of home runs for a .923 slugging percentage. She accounted for a team-high nine runs, with five RBI and four runs scored.
A number of pinch-hitting decisions worked out well for Chadron State, as pinch hitters were 5-for-8 with two walks.
Morgan Wilhelm went 3-for-4 by herself in pinch-hitting situations, with one walk. She also scored one run.
Taylor Seely got the first base hit of her career in relief, and made it count. In Friday's 12-0 win, the true freshman connected on a double to drive in the Eagles' final two runs of the mercy rule victory.
Three pinch-runners combined for four total runs during the weekend.
"We tell the girls all the time," said Stack. "Whenever their number's called, they have to be ready to run, or hit, or fill in on the field. They've all got to be ready to play."
"Taylor was excited about her two-RBI double. Putting some of those players into the game who haven't had many reps was a good thing, confidence-wise."
The Eagles will play the remainder of their season at home, hosting Colorado School of Mines next weekend and the University of Colorado Colorado Springs in the final weekend of regular season play. Both are scheduled for Saturday-Sunday doubleheaders.
"Colorado School of Mines is a team we haven't played in three years, because of weather," said Stack. "We just have to put ourselves in position and keep on rolling."
The CSM Orediggers and the UCCS Mountain Lions split a pair of games today, and both currently reside within the top eight teams in the conference standings, at No. 7 and No. 8 respectively.
