CHADRON, Neb. -- September 10, 2016 -- With senior
Alejandro Garcia setting a blazing pace, the Chadron State College cross country team won its home cross country meet Saturday.
Garcia covered the hilly 8-kilometer course in 25 minutes and 26 seconds. The Chadron State men, who had eight of the top 10 finishers, totaled 19 points.  South Dakota Mines was second with 46.
CSC coach
Brian Medigovich said while a majority of his men's team member ran well, Garcia's time was the biggest surprise.
Medigovich noted Garcia's mark was nine seconds faster than his time the previous week when he ran the same distance on a much flatter course in Rapid City.
The coach also noted that Garcia "pretty much ran by himself" Saturday while the previous week he was pushed during his a neck-and-neck battle with Gillette College's Festus Lagat, who won the race by one second.
Another CSC senior,
Dylan Stansbury, was second Saturday in 26:39.  Jacob Huber of South Dakota Mines was third in 26:45. Eagles' Phil Duncan and
Eric Yager took fourth and fifth, respectively.
In the women's competition, Mines Adeline Straatmeyer finished the 5-kilometer race in 19:03 to take top honors and lead her team to victory.
Chadron State's Maggie Vinton was the runner-up in 19:59, followed by three Lady Hardrockers—Kari Radke, Libby Friesen and Ryley Sutton.
Chadron State freshmen
Kiya Passero, Dominque Oden and
Savannah Silbaugh claimed the sixth through eighth spots.
The Eagles' next outing will be Saturday, Sept. 24 when they'll be among the nearly 40 Division II teams at the Roy Griak Invitational Meet at the University of Minnesota
