KEARNEY, Neb -- January 14, 2017 -- Chadron State College wrestling had a great day at the University of Nebraska-Kearney MIdwest Duals on Saturday, winning 21-20 against No. 12 California Baptist, losing a heartbreaker 20-18 to No. 8 Central Oklahoma, and walloping No. 18 Fort Hays State 32-10.
Brandon Kile,
Taylor Summers, and
Chance Helmick all three went 3-0 at the duals.
In Helmick's first match of the day, facing returning All-American Nolan Kistler of Cal Baptist, the Eagle junior earned a victory by fall to boost CSC to victory. Kistler was the 2016 Super Region Four runner-up at 165 pounds, and was ranked No. 9 in NCAA Division II last week at 174 pounds. Helmick also wrestled 165 last season before moving up a weight class.
Several other notable upsets occurred to add to the Eagles' team point totals.
Chadron State junior
Luke Zeiger, in his first match of the season returning from injury, defeated CBU's Peter Cunningham by a 1-0 decision. Cunningham was most recently ranked fifth in Super Region Four while Zeiger is sixth.
Redshirt sophomore
Cooper Cogdill, ranked seventh in the region, upset fourth-ranked Paul Head of CBU in an 8-2 decision. Head was a national qualifier last season at 197 pounds and was ranked as high as seventh nationally in December.
Helmick's 9-7 decision over Central Oklahoma's Miguel Barreras was his second upset of the day. Helmick, ranked fifth in the region came out on top over the region's fourth ranked opponent.
Finally,
Willy Cogdill's first-period pin over Rakim Dean was one of the biggest of the day. Dean is ranked seventh in the region, while the Chadron native, Cogdill, is unranked.
Chadron State, now 4-1 (3-0 RMAC) hosts Western State on Friday, January 20. The Mountaineers are 4-3 and the dual against CSC will be their first against a conference opponent. Against common opponents at the Midwest Duals, Western lost 25-18 to Central Oklahoma and 24-15 to Fort Hays State.
With a win over WSCU on Friday, the Mountaineers would be the seventh out of eight RMAC opponents that the Eagles have defeated in their most recent meeting. San Francisco State owns the last win - on January 17, 2015 - in the series with CSC.
