Roadrunners separate in fourth quarter for the win

DENVER – December 9, 2017 – The Chadron State College women led by seven points with nine minutes left in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference basketball game at Metropolitan State University of Denver on Saturday, but the team's shooting went cold in the fourth quarter. Despite a hard-fought CSC effort, a 18-0 spurt by the Roadrunners led them back from a five-point deficit at the end of the third quarter, as the Eagles fell 56-45.

The Roadrunners improve to 6-4 (2-2 RMAC), while CSC falls to 3-6 (1-3).

"We brought it tonight," said CSC Head Coach Janet Raymer. "The kids worked very hard. I'm proud of them for what they did. We tired them out, but then we got tired and it got away from us. Our kids did a very good job of keeping their heads up, and they kept going despite some really physical hits that took a toll on a few of our players."

Only seven field goals fell in the first quarter, as Chadron State took a 9-6 lead. Play sped up in the second, with the two teams battling back and forth, and MSU Denver taking a 20-19 lead into halftime.

Each team shot less than 30 percent in an ugly first half, and both committed 11 turnovers.

The Eagles hit on 7-of-17 from the field in the third period to go back on top, and took their biggest lead at 38-31, less than one minute into the final frame. However, the Roadrunners took over the game in the fourth, after CSC missed eight straight field goals.

Chadron State was kept away from the free throw line in the final period until 1:32 left in the game, when the MSU Denver lead had grown to double digits and the game was all but decided. The Roadrunners, meanwhile, were 8-of-10 from the charity stripe in the last 10 minutes.

MSU Denver junior forward Emily Hartegan kept her team afloat on offense, hitting 6-of-12 field goals and 4-of-4 free throws to finish with game-highs of 16 points and nine rebounds.

CSC's Kalli Feddersen led her team in most statistical categories. The senior guard had 12 points, eight rebounds, four assists, and the team's only block, and hit 2-of-5 from three-point range on another cold-shooting night for the Eagles. Chadron State shot 19-of-59 from the field for 32.2 percent.

Chadron State will resume conference play on Friday at South Dakota Mines. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
