CANYON, Texas -- February 11, 2017 -- Saturday was a tough day for the Chadron State College softball team, who were shut out twice on the final day of the West Texas A&M Invitational. The Eagles lost 8-0 to Washburn University in six innings before dropping a 10-0 decision to host WTAMU in five.
The Ichabods led 2-0 going into the sixth inning in the first game of the day, but were able to put across six runs in the sixth inning to activate the run rule.
Junior Washburn pitcher Kelsee Henry allowed single base hits in each of the first three innings to
Kayla Michel,
Allie Mason, and
Sheyann Ludwig, respectively. However that was all the offense the Eagles could muster.
Chadron State fared no better against the Lady Buffs' All-America and Lone Star Conference Pitcher of the Year Kilee Halbert in the final matchup. They scratched out four hits in the contest and were unable to draw a single walk.
Their best chance at getting across the plate was the second inning, when a Michel leadoff single was followed by a West Texas fielding error, and
Allie Mason laid down a sac bunt to put two in scoring position. However Halbert was timely with one of her two strikeouts on the day and
Alyssa Geist grounded out to end the inning.
CSC led off the fifth inning with two singles, but Halbert struck again with a punchout and
Courtney Lecher hit into a double play.
WTAMU did all of their damage in the first two innings, going up 10-0 on 10 base hits.
On the bright side for the Eagles, freshman
Megan Horn came in to pitch with two outs in the second, down 10-0, and struck out six Lady Buff batters in two and one-third innings to end the game.
Chadron State is off of competition next weekend before hosting defending RMAC Champ Colorado Mesa on February 25-26.
