CHADRON, Neb. -- February 11, 2017 -- Colorado State University-Pueblo edged Chadron State College 29-9 in the Eagles' final wrestling dual of the season, dealing CSC (7-2, 6-1 RMAC) their first conference loss of the season. The Eagles will still finish with the best Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference dual record in 2016-17, defeating six of the other teams in the league.
The ThunderWolves won seven matches and got two pins and a technical fall, while all three CSC wins were by decision.
Cooper Cogdill and
Brandon Kile won at 285 and 125, respectively, to close the score to 8-6 Pueblo and even the dual at two matches won apiece. However the ThunderWolves won five straight before
Chance Helmick defeated #10 Kyle Bateman at 174 for his 20th straight collegiate win. The junior grappler has not lost since December 3, 2016, at the Wisconsin Open.
CSU-Pueblo scored an upset win at 133, when PT Garcia went the entire second period on top to earn riding time, and benefited from a stalling point and a quick two-count nearfall to win 6-0 after a third-period takedown of
Taylor Summers. The Eagles' nationally-ranked returning national qualifier struggled with flu-like symptoms all week long.
Chadron State will now prepare to qualify as many individuals as possible for the NCAA Championships. Bids are earned by placing in the top four at the NCAA South Central Regional in Golden, Colorado, which will be the Eagles' next stop on February 24 and 25.
Five of the Eagles' reserves will also enter the Rocky Mountain Open in Golden on Sunday.
