Regis men survive Eagles in Denver

DENVER -- February 14, 2017 -- The Chadron State College men outshot Regis University 42.6 percent to 42.0, but the Rangers' offensive rebounding and forced turnovers led to 15 extra field goal attempts for the home team as they outlasted CSC 76-68 in Denver Tuesday night.

Regis had 28 points off turnovers to the Eagles' 13, and scored 17 second chance points versus nine for Chadron State.

"I was nervous about our guys playing three games on the road in five days, and having two road trips," said CSC head men's basketball coach Houston Reed, "but we competed. We sustained our level of play until about the six-minute mark, and then we had some of the mistakes we've seen all year long. We guarded well in transition, and guarded the ball screen well, but like I told the guys, you negate the fact you play well for 35 minutes when you have the breakdowns we had in the last four."

CSC tied the game up as late as 6:36 to play in the game, but the next 12 seconds saw junior forward Austin Hall collect his fourth and fifth fouls to exit the game, and the depleted Eagle defense gave up 20 points in the final 6:23 to outpace Chadron State to the finish.

Despite the disadvantage on the boards, the Eagles led the game for longer stretches than their opponent. The see-saw affair saw 16 lead changes and the game tied 12 times. CSC led by as many as six points with just over 13 minutes to play, but were unable to hold on down the stretch as RU's Jarrett Brodbeck capitalized on his final four field goal attempts of the game to score nine in the final 6:16 of the second half.

Brodbeck ended with a game-high 19 points after starting out hitting just 3-for-11 from the floor and 1-of-3 from the foul line.

For the Eagles, it was Jordan Perry pacing the team, both with his 16 points and his eight rebounds. Leigh Saffin had 12 points, and Darius Polley finished with 11 points and the next-best rebound total of six.

Chadron State gets 10 days to prepare for its final weekend of play, a homestand against the rivals from Black HIlls State University and South Dakota School of Mines & Technology.
