CLEARWATER, Fla. -- February 4, 2017 -- Pitchers in the Sunshine State continued to stymie Chadron State College batters on Saturday, holding CSC to one run in two games as they continued at the Eckerd College Softball Invitational. The Eagles generated a few more hits than they did on Friday, but were unable to convert most of those into runs, falling 8-1 to the University of Tampa and 8-0 to No. 17 Saint Leo University.
Taylor Bauer generated the lone run of the day on a third-inning solo home run against Tampa, tying the game at 1-1. The game broke open in the fifth and sixth innings, however, as the Spartans scored four and three runs, respectively, to race to the final score. The Eagles threatened in the top of the fifth, loading the bases with one out, but the Spartan pitchers found their way out of the jam.
Courtney Lecher, who was 2-for-2 with two walks in the early game, did not fare as well against Saint Leo, going 0-for-3 and stranding four on base. The Eagles' fifth inning mirrored closely the one from earlier in the day, as they got two hits and a walk to load the bases, only to leave all three runners stranded. The Lions did most of their damage in the fourth inning, when two hit batters, a walk, and an error helped them to plate four unearned runs.
SLU junior Samantha Tyler earned a complete game shutout in only five innings.
Chadron State started two different pitchers than they did in Friday's games, sending true freshman
Megan Horn to duel against Tampa and putting sophomore
Dallas Magnusson out in the circle versus Saint Leo.
Horn's outing lasted four and two-third innings and
Jessica Jarecki replaced her after two walks and three hits in the fifth. The four earned runs in that inning were charged to Horn, as well as one scored on three walks and a hit in the first.
Magnusson pitched four complete innings, allowing only five hits but also hitting four batters. Two of those hit batters were in the fourth where the Lions scored half of their runs. She was relieved in the fifth by redshirt freshman Hayley McKeehan, who allowed a double and a walk in her final inning, but no runs.
Both starting pitchers recorded three strikeouts apiece.
The Eagles face Saint Leo again on Sunday before ending their trip with a rematch against Tampa.
