Eagle softball wins one of two

LAS VEGAS, N.M. -- March 4, 2017 -- Chadron State College softball (6-10, 3-2 RMAC) continued to see their bats heat up on Saturday, getting 18 hits and 14 runs off of New Mexico Highlands University (5-14, 2-4 RMAC). The Eagles hit five home runs in the two contests combined and nine of their 18 total hits were for extra bases.

Another trend that continued, however, was the mental errors that head coach Rob Stack talked about after last weekend's series with Colorado Mesa. In the doubleheader CSC committed seven errors, leading to nine unearned runs. Six of those unearned runs came in the Eagles' 12-7 loss in game two.

Freshman pitcher Jessica Jarecki struck out 11 Cowgirl batters and walked only two, allowing only one earned run in seven complete innings in the first game, lowering her season ERA to 2.59 and raising her record to 5-2 as Chadron State triumphed 7-4.

The first runs of the game came as CSC senior Lindsey Karlin hit a two-run homer in the first inning after a Sheyann Ludwig single.

NMHU got those two back plus one more as two Chadron State errors extended the inning, putting the Cowgirls on top 3-2 after one.

Kayla Michel had the first hit of the third inning, and Zoe Humphries was next, hitting a two-run blast that proved to be the go-ahead and the winning RBI. NMHU was able to get just one more run across to set up the final score, as Jarecki stranded nine players on base in the win.

CSC was up 5-2 in game two after two innings, with a series of NMHU errors contributing. Ellie Owens had a solo homer in the second at-bat of inning two

An error in the outfield helped start a rally by Highlands in the third, but the Cowgirls piled on five hits to score six and go up 8-5. They added a solo homer in the fifth and benefitted from three more Eagle errors in the sixth to get to 12 runs.

RBI doubles by Karlin and Michel in the top of the seventh gave the Eagles hope, but they could not keep it going long enough to catch up.

Kinsley Mason, who took the loss in game two, had five strikeouts in four innings, while walking only one. She was charged with only three earned runs.

Another doubleheader begins at 11 a.m. on Sunday.
