Eagles nip Orediggers, fall short in game two

GOLDEN, Colo. -- April 14, 2017 -- Chadron State College softball won the first of two games Friday in Golden, Colorado, before dropping one in the bottom of the doubleheader against Colorado School of Mines.

Game one went scoreless through three innings, as each team managed only a single hit in the first and third measures.

Both teams also broke the scoring drought in the fourth. Aspen Eubanks reached on a base hit, and pinch-runner Kendyl Moody eventually scored after rounding the bases on a steal, a groundout, and a Mines error.

Mines pounded out three hits in the bottom of the inning to earn a run and the 1-1 tie.

In the sixth, Kayla Michel led off with a walk, and three other batters followed with bases on balls. Allie Owens, the fourth batter to walk in the inning, brought in Angelica Maples, who pinch-ran for Michel. CSC ended up on top, 2-1

Game two took an unfortunate turn for the Eagles in the form of a nine-hit, nine-run third inning that put the Orediggers up 10-1.

Chadron State was nearly able to extend the game in the fifth, after Morgan Wilhelm singled and Taylor Bauer hit a two-run blast to left field. Courtney Lecher later singled to represent the run needed to avoid the run-rule, but the Orediggers were able to close out the 11-3 victory in five frames.

Jessica Jarecki improved to 11-6 on the season in the game one win, while Kinsley Mason was charged with a loss and fell to 7-9. Mines pitcher Hallie Smith, who entered in the sixth inning of the first game and pitched all of the second, received both a loss and a victory.

CSC goes to 21-19 (18-11 RMAC) after the first two contests of the weekend, while CSM is now 23-13 (20-10 RMAC) and remains a game and a half in front of the Eagles for third in the conference standings.
