GOLDEN, Colo. -- April 22, 2017 -- Chadron State College athletes won 10 events and had 16 seasonal best marks Saturday during Colorado Mines' Nature Bakery Invitational Track and Field Meet in Golden.
Two Eagles were double-winners. Senior standout
Stachia Reuwsaat won the 100 meters (11.80 seconds) and the long jump (20-5) and sophomore
Cory Martens led the Eagles' domination of the men's throws by winning both the discus (174-2) and the hammer throw (192-9 ¼).
Chadron State's
Blake Jacobs also won the men's shot put with a career-best throw (53-5 ½) and was second to Martens in the hammer. In addition, teammates
Jesse Bleidt and
David Aldridge placed high in two of the throws. Bleidt was second in the discus and third in the hammer throw; Aldridge was second in the shot and fourth in the discus.
Another event winner for the CSC men was
Matt Klein, who took the high hurdles (15.17) after missing most of his senior season, both indoors and outdoors, because of an injury.
CSC sophomore Kahlil James was the runner-up in both the long and triple jumps with marks of 22-6 ¼ and 45-9 ¼.
Although the Eagles'
Mel Herl, who is among the national leaders in three throwing events, did not participate in the meet, Chadron State still dominated the women's throws. Junior
Ashlyn Hanson won the hammer throw (179-11 ½) and freshman
Ashton Hallsted (126-2 ½) edged senior
Keri Ruff by a half inch to capture the discus.
Both Hallsted and another freshman,
Danielle Weyer, exceeded 40 feet in the shot put for the first times in their college careers. Weyer was second (41-11 ½) and Hallsted was third (40-11 ½).
Another individual winner for the CSC women was senior
Tessa Gorsuch, who ran a season-best (14.07) in the 100 high hurdles.
The Lady Eagles also won the 4x100 relay, and coach
Brad Gamble was pleased that all three of his entries in the 400 meters—
Alisha Heelan (57.00),
Sierra Martinez (58.48) and Cassie Johnson (59.00), finished the race in under a minute.
Herl took her talents to the Jack Christiansen Meet at Fort Collins on Saturday and won all of the throws except the javelin while competing in Division II. Her marks were: shot put, 49-2 ½; discus, 167-5; and hammer throw. 197-6.
