CHADRON, Neb. – January 24, 2018 – Chadron State College wrestling won four of the eight weight classes it contested, but forefeited two open bouts and was edged in bonus points, in a 26-13 loss to New Mexico Highlands on Wednesday evening.
The Eagles got wins by decision from
Marcus Hutcherson,
Johnny Porter, and
Rulon Taylor, plus a 9-1 major decision at 174. Junior
Heber Shepherd scored the team's sole bonus point by defeating NMHU's Kenneth Yara.
The biggest setback in the match came at 157 in a technical fall by the Cowboys' Kellen Pelzel over sophomore Jacob Otuafi. Following their win in the second match of the night at 133 pounds, the visiting NMHU squad never trailed, but took nearly half of its 26 points late in the rotation when the Eagles forfeited 184 and 197 pounds.
The Eagles' star 141-pounder,
Brock Thumm, as well as true freshman
Devin Stork, slotted at 184, both missed the dual due to illness. Veteran
Joshua Miller stepped in admirably at 141 pounds.
Chadron State once again takes the mat on Friday at 6 p.m., hosting Adams State University in the Chicoine Center. Visitors are encouraged to dress in black for the team's "Blackout Night" promotion.
