PUEBLO, Colo. – January 10, 2019 – Colorado State University-Pueblo took seven decisions and one major decision, while CSC senior heavyweight
Rulon Taylor provided the sole points for Chadron State College, as the former won 31-3 in Pueblo on Thursday in its first Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference wrestling dual meet of the season.
Despite facing a lineup with two ranked individuals and a two-time national qualifier, the Eagles held the ThunderWolves to only one bonus point in the nine matches contested. Pueblo gained six points on a forfeit in the 125-pound category, and won eight straight to decide the match at 31-0.
Taylor's 5-1 victory over Pueblo's Shane Coombs provided the final score of 31-3.
CSC junior
Brandon Kile, at 133 pounds, took the nation's No. 4 wrestler to overtime, where he lost in a tiebreaker. Additionally, the Eagles' freshman 141-pounder
Joe Ritzen fought Pueblo's lone returning NCAA tournament participant to a 3-1 decision, in favor of the redshirt senior Paul Garcia.
At 165, Chadron State's
Johnny Porter again came close to a win for the visiting Eagles, leading 3-0 headed into the third period. However he yielded a reversal early on in the next frame and failed to come up with an escape for the win. The senior Porter gave up a riding time point in the final two minutes, and opponent Jair Flores was able to earn one sudden-victory takedown for the instant win.
Chadron State moves to 2-3 in the RMAC standings and 3-4 overall. The team hosts a dual in Rushville in one week, on January 17.
