LAKEWOOD, Colo. -- March 24, 2019 -- The Chadron State College softball team mounted a rally attempt in Sunday's final game at Colorado Christian University, but was unable to avoid the sweep losing 16-4 and 4-2 in the doubleheader in Lakewood.
A seven-run fourth inning was the clincher for CCU in Sunday morning's game, the third of the four-game series. The Cougars hammered out eight runs in the first two innings before a two-run homer by senior
Kayla Michel kept the Eagles alive in the third.
The Cougars, who entered the fourth inning up 9-2, laced together 6 of their 14 hits in the game, aided by a CSC fielding error and two walks, to place seven runners across home plate for the 16-4 win. CCU's margin of victory came despite only out-hitting CSC 14 to 10, and each team having two errors.
Michel was 2-for-2 in the batter's box with the home run being one of the at-bats. She also walked once.
Four pitchers entered for the Eagles, but
Cassidy Horn, who exited in the first inning, was saddled with the loss to drop to 1-3. Freshman Makena Martin (2-2) was CCU's winning pitcher.
In the afternoon, CCU jumped out to a 3-0 lead, before
Ellie Owens hit a leadoff double and
Angelica Maples brought her in with a sac fly.
Colorado Christian got one run back in the sixth with a pair of base hits, making it 4-1.
However, the Eagles looked to have a rally going in the seventh, when Michel led off with her second homer of the day, followed by Owens' second double. After a pickoff play at third put Owens out, and a pair of walks, CSC had the go-ahead run at the plate, but CCU pitcher Kenzie Mattey, who entered in the seventh for the save, struck out the last Eagles batter for the 4-2 win.
Jennifer Romero (7-2) earned her seventh win of the season, while
Gabby Russell (0-7) incurred her seventh loss.
Michel led the Eagles in the batter's box over the four game weekend, batting 4-for-10 with two home runs and a walk. Her two runs scored on the homers also led the team, as did her three RBI.
Chadron State is on the road for the eighth of nine weeks when it visits New Mexico Highlands next Saturday and Sunday. The Eagles are now 6-23 and 3-16 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.
