Smith, Jernigan named RMAC Field Athletes of the Week

COLORADO SPRINGS -- January 21, 2021 -- Two Chadron State College track and field student-athletes were named Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Athletes of the Week on Wednesday, in a release at rmacsports.org.

Sophomore Courtney Smith was named the women's RMAC Field Athlete of the Week after placing fifth in the women's shot put and eighth in the weight throw at the Wayne State College Wildcat Invite. With marks of 12.12 and 15.14 meters, respectively, The Rock Springs, Wyoming, native was six inches away from a personal best in the shot put. Both marks were season-bests and jumped her to No. 2 in the conference.

Naishaun Jernigan was the men's RMAC Field Athlete of the Week after scoring his first NCAA provisional marks of the season in the long jump and triple jump, winning both events. His long jump mark of 7.21 meters is a personal best and it won the event by nearly two feet. The sophomore from Springfield, Massachusetts, went 14.73 meters in the triple jump to capture it by 3 feet, 8 inches. Jernigan jumped to sixth in NCAA Division II in both events.

The Eagles are set to compete at the Myrle Hanson Open in Spearfish, South Dakota, this weekend.
