CHADRON, Neb. – November 1, 2021 – Chadron State College men's wrestling opened the season on Monday with lots of points and plenty of pins, defeating Northeaster Junior College 43-0 in a dual at the Chicoine Center.
Six Eagles wrestlers scored in the double digits, and five recorded wins by fall, as CSC went undefeated in 10 dual bouts and four exhibitions.
"Overall," said CSC Head Men's Wrestling Coach
Brett Hunter, "we excecuted some of the things we've been working on in the practice room, which is exciting to see. Some guys stood out, and others didn't, but I'm pleased with our effort."
In the varsity lineup, the fastest pin belonged to redshirt freshman
Dean Neff, who defeated his 157-pound opponent one second before the first period buzzer.
The other fall went to junior heavyweight
Mason Watt, who went to the second period scoreless but quickly earned a takedown and turned his opponent at 4:47 in the match.
Junior
Eli Hinojosa, at 197 pounds, had both the biggest margin of victory and shared the highest score, taking his opponent down eight times in a 19-7 major decision.
Newcomer
Chance Bockenstedt, a true freshman 149-pounder, gave the fans a show by also scoring 19. His three sets of nearfalls in the first period put him up 12-2, before the opponent mounted a rally attempt in the second with back points of his own. Bockenstedt survived, however, and resumed running up the score in the third for a 19-10 major.
The two others who scored in double figures were senior
Joe Ritzen, with a 15-4 major at 141 pounds, and junior
Preston Renner, a 10-3 winner at 165.
All four of CSC's exhibition wins came before the end of regulation. Sophomores
Ethan Leake and
Gavin Peitzmeier, along with junior
Terry Winstead each had a first period pin, while sophomore
Harrison Gocke scored the evening's only tech fall, winning 16-0 in 3:50.
The Eagles will send a few members of the team to an amateur open meet at Colorado School of Mines on Sunday, November 7, before tangling with the Nebraska Cornhuskers in Lincoln on Thursday, the 11th.
