LAREDO, Texas -- November 14, 2021 -- The Chadron State College women's basketball team (0-2, 0-0 RMAC) was unable to keep up with the Texas A&M International Dustdevils (1-0, 0-0 Lone Star) Saturday night despite improved play from Friday's season opener loss to Texas A&M Kingsville.
The Eagles started strong in the first quarter, shooting 63.64% on field goals (7-11), 75% on three-pointers (3-4) and 50% on free throws (2-4). Guard Bailey Brooks was responsible for two of the three first quarter three-pointers. The Dustdevils lead the Eagles at the end of the first quarter 26-19.
Chadron State took its foot off the gas in the second quarter, scoring 12 points off three three-pointers by guards Samiyah Worrell and Olivia Waufle as well as free throws made by Brooks and forward Riley Aiono. The Dustdevils' offense also slowed down, shooting 38.89% on field goals (7-18) and 20% on three pointers (2-10). The score was 45-31 Dustdevils at the half.
Both teams' offenses exploded in the second half with the Eagles outscoring International 25-20 in the fourth quarter. Despite the boom in points, Chadron State was unable to make a dent in the Dustdevils' lead, who ended up winning the game 92-72. The Eagles would finish the game shooting 41.1% on field goals (23-56), 33.3% on three-pointers (6-18) and 60.6% (20-33). International shot 47.8% on field goals (32-67), 37% on three-pointers (10-27) and 60% on free throws (18-30).
The Eagles will travel to Wayne, Neb. on Thursday, where they will take on the Wayne State Wildcats (1-0, 0-0 NSIC) at 6:30 p.m. Then they will host the Mount Marty Lancers (0-4, 0-1 GPAC) Sunday afternoon at 2:30 p.m., which will be followed by a Monday night exhibition game at the University of Wyoming.
