LARAMIE, Wyo. -- November 27, 2021 -- Led by fourth-place finishes by Eli Hinojosa and Ethan Leake, the Chadron State College men's wrestling team had four placewinners on Saturday at the revamped Cowboy Open in Laramie.

This year's field, while diminished in size, featured some of NCAA Division I's best competition in No. 3 Arizona State, No. 23 Utah Valley, No. 25 Wyoming, and Northern Colorado, which had four individuals ranked, in addition to NJCAA No. 3 Western Wyoming.

"The reason we came to this open meet, and sacrificed time with our families over Thanksgiving, was to expose our guys to the Division I style," said CSC Head Men's Wrestling Coach Brett Hunter. "Today we accomplished that. We know where we need to get better, and we're looking forward to addressing those issues this week."

Wrestling in an eight-man bracket, Hinojosa went 2-2 at 197 pounds. He opened with an 8-3 decision over an opponent from Utah Valley, and lost a 16-4 major in the semis to another one. In consolations, he majored his opponent from Northwest Kansas Technical College 14-3, and in the third place match, he lost a 5-4 heartbreaker to a third UVU opponent.

At 141, Leake's journey began with a pin over an unattached high school senior, and then he won 7-2 over a Wyoming opponent to make the semis. In the consolation quarters he suffered a first-period fall to another Wyoming foe, and passed through consolation semis due to a medical forfeit. In his third place match against No. 24 Chase Zollman of Wyoming, Leake's opponent escaped with a 6-5 decision.

Hunter Gilmore, also in the 141-pound bracket, notched pins in his first and third matches, including an opening round fall over NJCAA No. 7 Caleb Nathan of Western Wyoming. In between he lost a tech fall to a Wyoming opponent, and following his second win he ran into Zollman in consolation semifinals. He was advanced to fifth place as a result of a medical forfeit.

The fourth placewinner was Rowdy Pfeil at 184 pounds. Following a first-round bye, Pfeil dispatched a Wyoming opponent in a 6-2 decision to make semifinals. There, he took a 14-6 loss to Western Wyoming's Tyce Raddon, ranked junior college's No. 5 197-pounder. In consolation semis, he lost by fall to Utah Valley's Mahonri Rushton, and his fifth place match, he was pinned again by an opponent from Arizona State.

Quade Smith, at 125 pounds, Joe Ritzen at 141, and Harrison Gocke at 149, all went 2-2 at the meet.

The Eagles are off of competition for a couple of weeks before hosting three home duals and two neutral duals in the Chicoine Center on December 11.
