Box Score CHADRON, Neb. -- November 5, 2021 -- Middle hitter Aiyana Fujiyama recorded a .600 hitting percentage during Chadron State College's Friday night home loss to Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference foe Colorado Mesa (18-4, 13-2 RMAC). She landed six kills and zero errors in 10 total attempts to achieve the tenth-best hitting percentage in program history.
Though the Eagles (4-18, 2-13 RMAC) were swept 25-18, 25-14, and 27-25 by a team that ranks just outside the AVCA Division II Top 25 Poll, the true freshman was able to land six kills and zero errors out of 10 total attempts.
In set one the Eagles landed seven total kills and only two errors out of 26 total attempts. Three of those kills were recorded by Fujiyama, who also put up a solo block and a block assist during the set. Right side hitter Amelia Berg also earned three kills.
Set two featured the Eagles' best team hitting percentage of the night (.207), which consisted of 10 kills and four errors out of 29 total attempts. The Mavericks, however, immediately took the lead and did not give it up for the duration of the set while landing 17 kills and only two errors against the Eagles' defense. Fujiyama, Berg, and hitter Rylee Greiman each landed three kills. The trio combined for only four errors out of 23 total attempts.
The Eagles landed a whopping six total blocks in set three, of which two were solo blocks landed by outside hitters Amber Harvey and Allie Ferguson. The remaining were block assists landed by Fujiyama, Berg, setter Audrey Bennett, and outside hitter Alli Keisel. Bennett and Keisel each finished the night with four block assists.
CSC brought the score up from 22-24 after two Mesa attack errors and a Bennett service ace to make it 25-24 in set three. Then the Mavericks earned three points in row following two Eagle attack errors and a service ace by setter Sabrina VanDeList to close out the set 27-25, ending the match.
"I thought we battled and blocked well tonight against a very strong offensive team," said Head Volleyball Coach Jennifer Stadler. "We need to end rallies by putting the ball away against good teams."
The Eagles' final home match is set for Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m. in the Chicoine Center against Westminster (5-20, 3-12 RMAC). Saturday's match is Senior Night and following the match is the dinner and When Eagles Dare benefit auction and social starting at 6:30 p.m. in the Chadron Arts Center.
