Eagles have good performances at huge meet

BROOKINGS, S.D. -- January 22, 2022 -- Several members of the Chadron State College track and field teams had personal bests and  a number of others also placed among the top eight in their events at the massive D2 Invitational Meet hosted by South Dakota State University at Brookings on Friday.

Approximately 1,000 athletes from schools in six states participated.  Many of the events had at least 40 contestants.

Chadron State Coach Riley Northrup said was encouraged by how well most of the Eagles performed so early in the season.  Since the trip was a long one, he said he entered most of the sprinters in several events.  A couple of the CSC's top sprinters, Brody Roden and Morgan Fawver, did not compete Friday.

As usual, the CSC men did well in the jumps.  Sophomore Derrick Nwagwu was second in the triple jump by going 48-4, matching his indoor career-best and exceeding the 47-8 ½ that he uncorked a week ago at the Myrle Hanson Open Meet at Black Hills State.  The latter mark earned him the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference's Field Athlete of the Week Award last week.

In addition, Chadron State juniors Joss Linse and Brock Voth were fifth and sixth in the triple jump at SDSU with marks of 45-6 ½ and 45- ½, respectively.

In addition, CSC redshirt freshman Emory Yoosook placed third among the 44 long jumpers while going 22-7 ¾ and Joe Dumsa was eighth in the high jump at 6-4 ¾.

The Eagles' Miranda Gilkey took second in the women's high jump by clearing 5-3.

On the track, Osvaldo Cano was fifth among 47 entries in the 400 meters in 49.58 seconds and sixth in the 200 in 22.35 seconds, his indoor career-best.  His brother Osiel was 10th in the 400 in 50.40 seconds for his career-best.

Carlie Collier was sixth among the 32 women in the 400 meters in 59.67 seconds while freshman Caydince Groth was 10th in 60.33 seconds. Both won their heats during the preliminaries.

The Eagles will host their annual Don Holst Open Meet on Saturday, Jan. 29.
