No. 5 Wayne downs Eagles in three sets

CHADRON, Neb. – September 5, 2022 – The Chadron State College volleyball team fell in straight sets on Monday afternoon, losing 25-11, 25-13, 25-10 to cross-state rival Wayne State College at home in the Chicoine Center.

CSC fell to 2-6 in non-conference action, while the visitors, ranked No. 5 in NCAA Division II as of the latest poll Monday, improved to 9-0.

The Wildcats never trailed in any of the three sets.

The Eagles played a fairly clean first set, yet WSC was on target. The Wildcats scored 17 of their first 25 points on kills, hitting .368 as a team.

Three early kills by CSC sophomore right side Mayson Fago provided a spark for her team in the second set. The Eagles kept it fairly close until around 11-7, when the Wildcats created some separation with a 5-1 run. The match ended on a 6-1 spree for Wayne.

CSC played set three well early as well, but 13 errors plagued the home team, with the bulk of those coming in the middle serves of the set. At one point, Wayne earned 8 of 10 points on CSC miscues.

The Wildcats got 29 of their 44 kills from the middle hitter position.

Wayne State sophomore middle Taya Beller played an inspired match, recording 16 kills in three sets on 21 attempts, with only one error, for a monster hitting clip of .714. She added three total blocks on defense. Sophomore Maggie Brahmer spelled Beller and contributed 12 kills and no errors.

Fago led the Eagles with five kills, and she received serve 33 times with only two bad receptions.

CSC remains at home this week with home matches against Adams State and New Mexico Highlands Friday and Saturday evenings at 6 p.m. both nights.
