Eagles open Indoor Season with Promising Results

By Con Marshall

Chadron State College sprinters and field events participants turned in some promising results Saturday while competing at the Myrle Hanson Open Meet at Black Hills State in Spearfish.

Seth Mischke, Chadron State's new head coach after being having that position the previous 11 years at Black Hills State, said the meet is always interesting because it takes place immediately after the athletes have returned from their holiday break. Therefore, most of the marks generally are not as good as they had been in early December after the athletes had been working out much of the fall semester.

However, several Eagles had performances Saturday that were exceptions to that notion.

One was CSC graduate student Kyla Sawvell, who joined the Eagles last fall after having four outstanding seasons at Black Hills State. A three-time Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference gold medalist in the 20-pound weight throw, she hurled the iron ball 19.45 meters, or 63-feet, 9 ¾ inches, for a career best.

Sawvell also won the shot put Saturday with a mark of 45-feet, 10 inches, but during the Yellow Jacket Holiday Meet in December, her throw was exactly a foot longer.

In the men's competition, CSC's Daniel Reynolds won both of those events with marks of 64-3 ¾ in the 35-pound weight and 50-9 ¼ in the shot. Neither was quite as good those in December, when he improved his Chadron State weight throw record by about 2 ½ feet by hitting 67-3 ½.

Mischke said many of the other Eagles also performed well Saturday. He was particularly impressed that high jumpers Jourdaine Cerenil and Destiny Pelton both cleared 5 feet, 5 inches and barely missed going over 5-7.

On the track, Carlie Collier was the runner-up in both races, but she ran the 60 meters in 7.84 seconds to nearly match her career-best time and finished the 200 in 26.22, a bit faster than her mark at the same meet a year ago.

Chadron State men won all three of the sprints at the Hanson Meet with career-best marks. Quincy Efeturi won the 60 in 7.02 seconds, Osvaldo Cano the 200 in 22.43 and Greg Logsdon the 400 in 50.77.

Cano and Logsdon also ran on the winning 4x400 relay team. The others runners were Osiel Cano and Harley Rhoades.

Other CSC winners were Creighton Trembly in the 60-meter hurdles and James Bruner in the high jump.

The Eagles will be among the approximately 15 Division II teams to compete at South Dakota State in Brookings on Friday.
