HAYS, Kan. -- Brandon Paredes placed sixth at 157 pounds to pace Chadron State Wrestling in Hays, Kansas at the Bob Smith Open Saturday.

Only eight wrestlers made the trip for CSC. Of the eight,
Jaziah Whaley, a senior from Gilcrest, Colorado, is the only one who has wrestled in a dual this season.

Paredes, a sophomore from Tuscon, Arizona, went 3-1 in a field that contained many division one opponents. He started his day 3-0 with a 16-2 major decision, a 4-2 decision and a pin in 49 seconds to reach the semifinals. A 4-1 loss occurred to the eventual champion in the semis. Paredes medically forfeited his remaining matches, to place sixth.

After receiving a first round bye at 133 pounds,
Colter Julian defeated his first opponent with a 13-11 decision. Julian, a senior from Kemmerer, Wyoming, was defeated by decision in quarterfinals and medically forfeited his consolation match to finish 1-1.

At 141 pounds,
Skyler Geier-Dodson, a junior from North Platte, Nebraska and
Cyrus Wells, a sophomore from Merna, Nebraska, both went 1-2.

Torry Early, a senior from Oak Park, Illinois was the only Eagle that finished with a winning record. At 149 pounds, Early finished 3-1 with a 9-4 decision and two 15-0 tech falls. He also medically forfeited his final match to be eliminated from the tournament.

Whaley finished 1-2 at 165 pounds, while
Dylan White, a sophomore from Scottsdale, Arizona went 2-2 in the same bracket.

Bryan Zutavern, a senior from Dunning, Nebraska, who wrestled at 197 pounds last season, went 2-2 at 285 pounds.

The Eagles return home on Friday for a highly anticipated matchup with Nebraska-Kearney at 6 p.m. Updated team rankings will be released Monday, with the possibility of a top 15 ranked dual.
