CSC Women Succumb to Third Quarter Drought

By Con Marshall

The Chadron State College women's basketball team went on an eight-point run in the final four minutes of the first half to take a 27-24 halftime lead Saturday night while playing at Colorado State-Pueblo, then made the first two baskets in the third quarter to build a seven-point margin.

However, the homestanding ThunderWolves tallied the next 19 points to go ahead 43-31 and went on to down the Lady Eagles 62-50 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference game.  The visitors committed seven turnovers and missed eight shots during their seven-minute drought.

Chadron State cut what had been Pueblo's 12-point lead to down to seven midway in the fourth quarter, but couldn't completely close the gap,

The winners shot 38% (24-63) from the field and the Eagles 30% (19-63). Pueblo hit six 3-pointers, two more than CSC.  Both teams made eight free throws.  Chadron State out-rebounded the hosts 53-35, but had 21 turnovers and Pueblo 10.

CSC's Samiyah Worrell was the game's leading scorer with 18 points while going 7-15 from the field, including three 3-pointers.  The Pack, as the CSU-P teams like to be known, was able to limit Shay Powers, the Eagles' top scorer for the season with a 17-point average, to just five points. However, Powers was the game's top rebounder with 13.

Pueblo's super seniors, JaNaiya Davis and Charisse Fairley, each scored 15 points and combined to grab 17 rebounds.

The victory evened Pueblo's record to 12-12 overall and 9-9 in the RMAC. The Eagles are 4-20 and 4-14, and will play at Metro State and Colorado Mines this weekend.
