CHADRON, Neb. -- The Chadron State College track and field team opened its outdoor season by placing in several events against stiff competition that included five NCAA Division I teams at the Spank Blasing Invitational Meet at Colorado State-Pueblo on Friday and Saturday.

Senior Kyla Sawvell of Wall, S.D., who earned All-American honors in both the shot put and the weight throw two weeks ago at the Division II National Indoor Meet, also placed high in two throwing events at the Blasing Meet.

Sawvell was second in the shot put with a heave of 45 feet, 10 ¾ inches, and placed third in the hammer throw with a mark of 182-10.  The latter mark is fifth on Eagles' all-time list.

Carlie Collier of Dunning, Neb., placed second among the 40 contestants in the 200-meter dash in 25.51 seconds and also was sixth in the 100 in 12.23 seconds.  Shantae Morgan, a native of Jamaica, also ran well, placing sixth in the 200

In the men's action, Osvaldo Cano of Oshkosh finished third in the 400 meters in 49.50 seconds and also was eighth in the 200 meters with a time of 22.23 seconds.

Another highlight saw the Eagles' Creighton Trembly of Longmont, Colo., place fourth in the 110-meter high hurdles in 14.38 seconds.  Only three Chadron State hurdlers have ever run the event faster.

In addition, Logan Peila of Miles City, Mont., was seventh in the 400-meter hurdles in 53.34 seconds. His time also is the fourth fastest in CSC annals.

Weather permitting, the Eagles will inaugurate their new outdoor track this coming Saturday, April 1.
